Are you a Multipotentialite? Do you really need "one true calling"?

You can barely turn a corner without tripping over advice on how to find your niche these days. But what if you’ve got more callings than you can shake a stick at?

Welcome to the world of multipotentiality.

What is a multipotentialite?

“A multipotentialite is defined as someone with many interests and creative pursuits, and the ability to excel in multiple fields,” explains EZRA Coach Shawn O’Toole.

If that sounds very da Vinci, that’s no coincidence. “In the past, they have been referred to as polymaths or Renaissance people,” he says.

Lost in a world of specialists

The problem is, workplaces have traditionally been the domain of specialists, with linear careers focusing on improving core skills.

For people who see variety not just as the spice of life but as its very essence, this has been tough. Many feel like they don’t fit in or worry that there’s something ‘wrong’ with them.

But nobody puts a multipotentialite in a corner.

3 Multipotentialite Superpowers

“Much can be gained through an appreciation for different disciplines,” Shawn points out. When they aren't boxed in, their superpowers are unleashed:

1. Idea Synthesis

Multipotentialites have an innate ability to “step back and connect the dots.” Thanks to their smorgasbord of interests, they can weave together different domains in ways invisible to others. “Recognize that they are great at generating ideas,” Shawn advises.

2. Rapid Learning

Acquiring new knowledge is easier when you’re an experienced beginner. A life spent switching things up—driven by what Shawn calls “their endless curiosity”—means picking up new skills is second nature.

3. Adaptability

As for change? That’s water off a duck’s back. “Multipotentialites are better equipped to deal with (and even thrive in) uncertainty,” Shawn says. As proactive agents of change, they step into new challenges like a pair of old slippers.

A multipotentialite future

With careers getting squigglier by the day, and 39% of existing skill sets set to be outdated by 2030, multipotentialites are perfectly equipped for what’s to come.

In a world where constant disruption is the biggest challenge businesses face, these modern Renaissance people are an invaluable asset. As Shawn says, “Organizations would be very wise to start working with theirs now.”
